A new art installation for London

Smith and Wallwork engineered artist Alex Chinneck’s installation ‘A bullet from a shooting star’ – an upside down electricity pylon for the 2015 London Design Festival.

A 35m full size pylon was re-designed and fabricated from scratch to resist forces opposite to those acting on the original designs. A 65° lean is achieved with 4 pre-stressed cables and 75m3 of ballasting concrete, resisting 8t of wind load and a potential 25t ice load. A the base of the pylon a Ø75mm steel pin holds everything together.

This full size art installation was commissioned to raise awareness of the North Greenwich Peninsula development by Knight Dragon and can be still visited until late 2016. It is located between the O2 Arena and Canary Wharf and lit at night, creating a striking visual effect.
