Research was carried out into timber concrete composite construction with Digby Symons and Richard Persaud from Cambridge University Engineering Department, while we were working at Ramboll.
The idea of locking a timber glulam beam to a thin concrete floor slab is new to the UK. Standard industry products were used — concrete, mesh reinforcement, profiled metal deck, large diameter coach screws and a glulam beam.
Initial shear tests were carried out using different types of connnector, and a full-scale 7.5m span floor plate was also tested to failure.
The composite action formed between the timber and concrete (via the coach screws) saw a 3-fold increase in stiffness and 2-fold increase in strength of the glulam beam.
