Foresters, joiners and engineers join forces to identify Holkham Estate trees for felling.

Smith and Wallwork has proposed using timber from the Estate to create a new roof to the old potteries. Eighteen bow string trusses are proposed using structural grade timber. The woodland visit highlighted chestnut, larch and pine options but oak proved most appropriate with a number of wind felled trees as well as dead standing oaks. Using dead wood is the most sustainable method possible when selecting UK grown timber for felling.

A mobile saw mill will be on site next week and the trees prepared for seasoning on completion of sawing. Small sections will be used to speed the seasoning process with the timber then finger jointed and glue laminated to create the 6.5m sections required to create the new roof.
