After a busy few weeks Alex Chinneck’s pylon installation opens.

The Smith and Wallwork designed structure sees nearly 13t of steel balancing on a single steel pin – all restrained by four pre-stressed cables and held down by 175t of shallow concrete strip footings that act as ballast.

Potential for strong winds and winter ice have driven the design – up to 26t of ice could form on the steel lattice structure – which determines the magnitude of cable pre-stress.

The structure will be open to all as part of the 2015 London Design Festival and it is likely to remain insitu for a couple of years until the area is developed.
