Smith and Wallwork has been appointed as civil and structural engineer for Cambridge University’s new boathouse in Ely; a new home for the various rowing teams of the University.

The project is being designed by Jeremy Bailey Architects working with Baynes and Mitchell Architects, a collaboration that won the architectural design competition run by the client.

The development sees ambitious plans for new training and coaching facilities that will bring together the men’s and women’s boat race teams in time for the first ever women’s University boat race on the tideway in 2015.

Built on greenfield floodplain the project will demand Smith and Wallwork’s expertise in flood water management and an iconic design will see our structural thinking tested to create the beautiful folded plate roof…reminiscent of Felix Candela’s engineering masterpieces.
