Timber and fire often attracts negative association in the construction industry, in many instances the claims made are not backed up with coherent arguments and lacking in proper analysis.

At Smith and Wallwork we are working on two timber projects that have caught the attention of outside influences – namely insurance and mortgage – which are slow to pick up on new methods of construction. Luckily there are now pioneering timber structures in the UK, Italy, Australia, Sweden, Germany and Austria which have overcome significant prejudice to be built and can now act as demonstrator projects to move forward.

In particular a recent project in Austria caught our attention, perfect to send on to any doubting Thomas at the insurers or mortgage brokers…a fire station build out of wood.
